Helping Alex
Story Highlight
Read about Alex and see how you can help him.
Meet Alex Hickey. He is a 3 year old boy from Wigan who suffers with a condition that affects his legs for which he has to wear leg splints every day. He is a lovely little boy who is full of life and we want to help him get the help he deserves.
Alex has a condition called Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy, which means it effects his legs, causing him to walk high on his tip-toes and frequently fall over, to enable him to walk a little better he wears plastic leg splints. He also has to do daily physiotherapy to relieve the tightness in his muscles.
Alex needs to go to America to have this Operation because it isn't readily available in the UK until he is 6 and there is no guarantee he will fit the criteria when he reaches this age. The operation involves cutting the 'bad' nerves going into his legs which causes the spasticity. This will significantly improve his walking, posture and enable him to walk with flat feet and he will not have to wear leg splints, but Alex will need intense physiotherapy for 12-18 months after the operation to strengthen his muscles. The operation date is set for 28th June 2011.
